Our latest collector dinner featured wines from the Cathiard family's estates in Bordeaux and the Napa Valley, paired with creative small plates by The Buffalo Club's Executive Chef, Kevin Sippel. The pairings were a home run.
I have visited Smith Haut Lafitte many times. It is a regular stop during my en primeur tastings, and Daniel and Florence Cathiard are always enthusiastic hosts. The estate has a long and rich history, dating back to the 14th century. However, it wasn't until the 1990s that the property began to shine under their ownership. Today, they produce exceptional red and white wines focusing on sustainability and innovation. They are some of the most consistent wines from the Pessac Léognan appellation, renowned for their depth, complexity, and elegance.
About Cathiard Vineyard: Cathiard Vineyard is a 20-acre parcel on Howell Mountain known for its high elevation and volcanic soils. The property was purchased in 2016 by Daniel and Florence Cathiard, owners of Smith Haut Lafitte. The winery is still in its early stages but has received critical acclaim for its wines. The Cathiards are committed to sustainable farming practices and plan to build a state-of-the-art winery and hospitality center in the coming years.
