Fiancée is only bottled in exceptional years and the last release was the 2016 vintage. The blend is 50% Grenache from the 100-year-old Terres Blanches plot, which lends finesse and silkiness to the wine, and 50% Syrah from the Cabri res plot, which contributes fruit, power, colour, and cocoa aromas. Rigorous bud pruning is done to keep yields low, as well as green harvesting and leaf thinning. The picking is entirely by hand, with sorting in the vineyard and again in the cellar. Underripe stalks are removed, and the juice stayes on the skins for four weeks; aged in 600L barrels that are at least three years old. The final cuvée is aged 20 months before it is bottled, unfiltered.
The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Fiancée turned out splendidly. Wild strawberries, orange rind, black cherry compote, and crushed violets mingle with striking spice box and licorice aromatics. Anchored by ripe tannins, the 2022 is a powerful and savory Fiancée, benefitting from the inclusion of fruit that typically goes into the Pure (which was not made in 2022 due to summer hailstorm damage). A long, complex finish confirms a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape of outstanding quality with secure aging potential. (Vinous Media, 94)
A sleek version, with an opulent core of red licorice and cherry on a foundation of smoldering iron. Wafts of alder smoke join subtle fruitcake spice notes. There's good energy to the lush finish, with a bitter mineral vein pulsing through. Drink now through 2040. 150 cases made, 40 cases imported. (Wine Spectator, 94)
